Late Tumblr post. Intensity! Reese, Sev, Noni, and I got awards at the 2011 Philippine Graphic Design Awards! It was extremely overwhelming being judged by the best designers and conceptualizers in the country. Especially with my thesis where I really had to forsake some form for function. When I read the comments in BluPrint magazine, I got more worried because the comments were quite critical (but well-pointed out!).
But alas, the night proceeded and we won the Magenta Award, which is the top prize in the student category! :D Did not expect that at all! I thought people wouldn’t like it. Pictures of trash and broken infrastructure laid out on a grid seemed boring and mundane compared to all the gorgeous illustrations and design work made by the others!
Thank you lang talaga, Lord. At the beginning, I was skeptical on taking this on as my thesis, but thank you for friends and mentors that proved me wrong.
I’m still waiting for additional funding (from savings and otherwise) and an actual strategic plan to execute it. I’m also waiting for 3G and internet-ready phones to be quite mainstream, by then everyone will be able to submit. Design-wise, there are also a lot of things to be changed.
For now, I try to keep the spirit of grassroots journalism up by participating in our website called Tao Po. It’s a website we’re maintaining that aims to serve common government agency concerns of people by publishing them and connecting their concerns over to the government. We try to make government work for us.
If you want to submit anything government agency related, drop by the website. We update everyday with agency news and issues :)
